On a mission

To work towards improving animal health so as to safeguard livelihoods, food safety and public health through effective service delivery, capacity development of professionals and producers, innovation and good governance

;

Animal Health and Welfare

Animal diseases affect the health and welfare of animals negatively leading to morbidities, mortalities, increased costs of control measures and reduced productivity. These diseases especially those of economic and public health concerns have considerable adverse effects on food security and nutrition, food safety, public health and income generation, hence reducing the contribution of animal resources to national economies. Through various intervention measures, these diseases can be prevented, controlled or eradicated. Animal welfare is increasingly becoming a factor in the trade of animals and animal products and needs to be tackled.
We will promote good governance, for effective animal health service delivery, which is required for animal disease control, safe trade, and food and nutrition security.

Public Health Emergencies

Public health emergencies and natural disasters impede the health and welfare of animals. These lead to an increased disease burden, loss of productivity and death of animals. There have been an increasing number of emerging and re-emerging diseases of which some are zoonotic in nature. Mitigation of these emergencies that affect animals will also address public health concerns.

Capacity Development, Research and Advocacy

Adequate human resource development at the various strata of animal health care delivery will enhance the provision of animal health and welfare. Animal disease occurrences are dynamic; hence professionals, producers, policy makers and other stakeholders need to have data and information for evidence-based decisions. Research into prevention, control and eradication of animal diseases will add to the body of knowledge especially for local solutions, which will be sustainable. Good governance through comprehensive policies will give direction for service delivery and enable streamlining of multi-sectoral and inter-disciplinary collaborations.

Livestock Production, Livelihoods and Nutrition

Improved productivity of livestock is indicative of the well being of the animal. Productive animals make for improved livelihoods, increased incomes and the provision of nutritious animal products. Women and youth keep livestock in many cases; therefore activities that raise the productivity of livestock will empower women and youth as well as create jobs. This will also lead to increased contribution of livestock to national economies.
